What will you do with 655 gently sloped, south facing hectares of the world's only inland temperate rainforest located in the West Kootenay Region of Southeastern British Columbia, Canada? The multitude, variety & magnificence of the trees found on Aspa inspired its current caretakers to use it as an eco-forestry school, personal retreat & family get-away over the last 30 years. The property & its abundant supply of trees, fresh water & adventure encompass the majority of the Rest Creek watershed in the Bonnington Range

Here is a riverfront, valley property with a southern aspect in a coveted area with self-sufficiency potential that is well suited to a changing climate and economy. One look at this homestead and I was thinking relocalization-ready, post-collapse friendly, and an all-around really nice place to live. It is 10 acres in total - 8.5 acres is on the river side of a back road with the remaining 1.5 acres sitting above the road. - The 8.5 acres is in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). It has a solid house (more on that later), gardens, fruit and nut trees,

Part Two...

This is the second half of a two-part article featuring a mock speech for the 25th anniversary of an event that has not yet been created. It is set in the year 2035 and describes the ecological and economic changes we are now seeing manifest (quickly). The speech assumes some creative license and of course is fictional...for now. (Part Two) 25th Annual Green Awards for Innovation & Activism November 12, 2035, Fernie, BC, Canada ...With greenhouse gas emissions now reduced to close to 100% from 1990 levels it is time to celebrate and envision what we want our lives to look like in another 25 years. 2060 seems like a long way off but so did

25th Annual Green Awards for Innovation & Activism

As one of BC’s first active Greener REALTORS® and Executive Director of the Greener Realty Association I am often asked what being a greener REALTOR® means. What do we do differently? To answer this question and to provide context for why were are creating a new, green paradigm of the real estate industry I have prepared a mock speech for the 25th anniversary of an event that has not yet been created. It is set in the year 2035 and describes the ecological and economic changes we are beginning to adopt now. In outlining the role and possible development of Green Real Estate Agents as Agents of Change the speech assumes some creative license

Climate Change & Real Estate

What is threatening the value and safety of your home? Floods? Fire? A changing economy? The rising cost of fuel and energy?

What can you do about it? (Additional Note: Perhaps the most relevant climate change-related threat we collectively face is the damage currently being afflicted by our federal government in Bali, Indonesia as it continues to stall global progress on mitigating the causes of what is now recognized by the international re-insurance companies as the number one threat to our economy. Canada has to walk its green talk and that likely means cutting the NAFTA restraints that keep us committed to dirty projects

A Challenge To ecoDesigners

October 25th, 2007
My sense is that there is a growing, albeit small number of people choosing not to fly for environmental reasons. I wonder if these numbers might be accelerated if mass, distant, land travel was made even just a little more comfortable. Having more than a few 12 plus hour bus journeys under my belt, I think part of the comfort equation on buses and trains is widening the area one can curl up on. Until new bus designs are introduced in our neck of the woods (if ever) length is out of the question unless you want people constantly tripping over your legs as they hang over the aisle. What about an inflatable or accordion-style platform to fill the foot area

Where Will the Designers Stop?

What can be said? What hasn't been thought of? Dare I ask?

I love the 'out-of-the-box' attitude behind this sort of thing. There are so many pre-engineered products out there to be rethunk. Ok, so 'rethunk' isn't a word but surely there should be a campaign going on somewhere to add 'rethink' to the 'reduce, reuse, and recycle' mantra. Its integral that we rethink a whole lot of stuff, if not everything - how we value property, resourses, other beings, our sense of entitlement, etc. I bet if we all lived in rooms like these (stuffed in the side of a hill here in Canada to stay warm

The Truth May be Convenient & in your Garage

CNW Marketing/Research's latest report about the true energy costs of the vehicles we drive is causing a few potential Prius Buyers to stall their decision making. Can the Jeep Wrangler really be over five times less environmentally impactful than a Honda Civic Hybrid? When you factor in the manufacturing and disposal/recycling this may be the case. Fuel efficiency is no longer the be all and end all, in fact its not even the starting place. "Energy Efficiency is More than Just Fuel Economy Looking for an energy efficient vehicle? Scion xB leads the list, significantly better than even the best hybrids. That’s the conclusion of long-term
