Solstice Summer Lanterns

Below you will find instructions and diagrams to make your own GreenerHomes.ca tea-light lanterns. If you did not receive our mail-out you can download the lantern pattern by clicking here. This is a project suitable for adults or adult supervised children.

Instructions:

Tools and Materials Needed:
Scissors, hole punch, pointed cutting knife (optional), cutting board, clear tape, string, sticks (2 - one approximately 1 meter long, the other about half a meter), tea light candle, a phone or access to email (to contact the professionals at GreenerHomes.ca) if things go sideways.

Step One:
Make two or more copies of Side B – the one with the cut/fold lines. (Legal size recommended on post consumer paper).

Step Two:
Using your scissors cut along all dotted lines and remove excess material.

Option: Get out the paints or crayons and custom colour your house lantern.

Step Three:
Use hole punch to remove dotted circles. Cut out windows and door using your pointed knife and cutting board (or scissors if knife is not available).

Step Four:
Fold along solid lines - away from Sheet Side A – the printed side (with cut, fold and shingle lines will be on the inside.

Step Five:
Cut two 60 cm (24 inch) lengths of string. Starting from Sheet Side A thread one length of string through Hole F and back through Hole B so that it runs along the inside (this side) of Corner 2. Leaving about 25cm (10 inches) of string loose continue to thread the first piece of string through Hole D (from Sheet Side A) and back through Hole H (again the string will be on the inside of Corner 4 (Sheet Side B).

Step Six:
Create Corner 1 by taping Corner 1A to Corner 1B.

Step Seven:
Repeat Step Five's threading procedure with the second string starting with Hole E to Hole A and then over to Hole C and back through Hole G (remember to leave plenty of slack in the string between Holes A and C).

Step Eight:
Use a piece of tape to hold all of the Floor Tabs (1 through 4) together.

Step Nine:
Pull ends of string so that they cross under the floor tabs (make sure the string ends are all approximately the same length).

Step Ten:
Place Tea Light Candle inside the house.

Step Eleven:
Tape Roof Corners together.

Step Twelve:
Use one knot to tie all of the string ends together and use scissors to trim excess.

Step Thirteen:
Place the 1/2 meter stick on the longer stick a few inches from the end. Use another length of string to securely lash the two pieces together.

Step Fourteen:
Repeat Steps Two through Twelve with the photocopied sheets of Step One.

Step Fifteen:
Hang all the lanterns on the shorter stick and have a friend carefully light the candles.

Have fun and be safe.
